The idea with this book was to research, write and illustrate a guide that contained walking routes to every mountain summit over 2,000ft in Ireland. The mountains of Ireland are often bleak, boggy, rocky and pathless. There were 212 summits to visit, as well as several walking routes to check before making the final selection. The research required three separate trips to the mountains, totalling three months, but spread over six months. The book sells well, but the number of people known to have climbed to every summit is in single figures. In a review, Alan Castle said, "The Mountains of Ireland will be seen as something of a landmark in the history of Irish hillwalking literature."
