See here for a bit of background about this title, which ties in with 'Exploring the North of Ireland'. The southern volume takes in 36 rich and varied routes around a large part of Ireland. The route research took a month of walking to complete, though also included a couple of walks that had been checked a short while before the contract was issued. Originally, the area should have been covered by three volumes, but it was cut back to one. Even so, there was an opportunity to showcase a variety of popular walks from around the country, and also present some less well known routes and areas to readers. In effect, the routes are stretched roughly around the edges of Ireland, taking in several mountain ranges and occasional stretches of coast. A couple of walks are further inland, almost in the centre of Ireland. Travelling was accomplished using Bus Eireann Rambler Tickets.
