The first guidebook in a long association with Cicerone Press. While writing a series of walking route descriptions for Country Walking, it became apparent that there was no comprehensive walking guidebook covering the whole of the North Pennines AONB. A selection of articles were photocopied and sent to Cicerone with a proposal for a guidebook covering a variety of routes in the area. After a brief discussion a contract was issued and the research began in earnest. The North Pennines are wild and remote, more so than any other part of England, and their high moorlands are wide open to whatever the weather hurls at them. For the purposes of the guidebook, the area was divided into a dozen parts, and a total of 42 walks ensured that the area's wilderness, history and heritage was thoroughly explored, with a few additional pointers towards longer walks. In a review in High magazine, Jerry Rawson said, "For the first-time visitor to the North Pennines it is a must."
